Over the past 10+ years, I’ve been running a custom built PC at home which I must say has served me well. Although it still runs, it’s old hardware and getting ready for retirement.
For a while now I’ve been wanting to built my own home lab partly to consolidate and virtualise my hardware but also to allow me to geek out with tech. There are many areas of technology that I would like to get more exposure to and this was a big part of deciding to build a home lab. Having my own platform will give me the flexibility of spinning up workloads on demand for testing and learning new things.
So, with the year drawing to a close, I decided Christmas would come a little early this year!
After some consideration, I decided on a fairly modest setup that took up little space and was fairly low on power consumption.
Tech specs:
- Intel NUC 12th Gen Wall Street Canyon Pro (NUC12WSKi5)
- Kingston FURY Impact 32GB DDR4
- Samsung 980 PRO 1TB Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD
- Synology 2 bay NAS DiskStation DS220+
- 2 x Western Digital 12TB WD Red Plus NAS HDD
Over the coming months I’m planning to create a series of posts to share my progress as I go though the build process.
